PSYCH 1F03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Source-Monitoring Error, Decay Theory, Mnemonic
Document Summary
Encoding reflects data entry or how info initially enters into memory, a selective process that is highly dependent on attention. Storage concerns how the record of memory is maintained over time; not fixed and can be modified. Retrieval is the act of recovering stored info. Memory retrieval is dependent on retrieval cues - a key piece of info that has the potential to activate a memory in full. Cues become integrated w/ the memory at the time of encoding. Due to the reconstructive nature of memories, we can be susceptible to false memory implantation. Believability of events and the effects of imagination play a strong role in implanting false memories. Narratives are more likely to elicit the info of false memories. Self-relevant details are highly familiar and fluently processed. Sensory memory: the transient maintenance of perceptual and physical info from your very recent past. Memory isn"t limited by attention and may have a large capacity.
