What causes war chapter 1 notes . Book is about causes of interstate war, which is large scale organized violence between armed forces of states. Armed violence can take many forms, for example, gang wars, civil war. These various forms of conflict are different and their causes are analytically different. Assumption throughout book is that war should be avoided. Greatly enhanced technology has increased the destructiveness of wars. Theme of book, is if we understand what causes war, we should be able to prevent their occurrence. Term theory in this book refers to something more than a hunch. Two kings of theory, normative theory and empirical theory. Normative theory deals with how things ought to be. Asks questions like what practices of fighting are acceptable? . Empirical theory or causal theory, deals with why things are the way they are. Concerned with what causes certain behaviours and outcomes. Goal of empirical theory is the explanation of behaviour.
