Classical realism on order and stability, community, order, and stability. Classical realism (lebow: the international arena is an anarchical, self-help system where states work to take advantage of one another. Individuals, groups, and states combine to protect themselves from predators. Interest and justice: contemporary realists, waltz = political clout of nations correlates closely with economic power and military might, primacy of self-interest over moral principle. Justice as a dangerous foundation for foreign policy: thucydides, capabilities are the only source of power (don"t equate power with influence) Influence is a psychological rel"n based on ties that transcend momentary interests. Justice is the foundation of rel"n and sense of community, on which influence and security depend: tension between interest/justice (gets worse in response to war) Justice (or belief in it) is foundation of community: behind facade of democracy is the rule of one man. If people figure out there"s no care for justice they will revolt/class conflict will occur.
