The ideology of a political party gives it purpose and direction. Ideology energizes the emotions of partisans and feeds their intellects, and successful ideologies will embed themselves in the political culture of a society. A key characteristic of a politi(cid:272)al pa(cid:396)ty"s ideology is its g(cid:396)ou(cid:374)di(cid:374)g i(cid:374) the past as it is made relevant to contemporary conditions. Followers of an ideology have a sense of tradition of being part of an ideology that was and will be prevalent before and after them. Parties however must modernize and continually re-examine and re-interpret their ideologies, they must evolve their ideologies as time and government evolves, to keep their followers faithful and win over the masses. Plato, aristotle, and co. have offered interpretations of the relationship between the individual and society: what the relationship is and ought to be. Political parties wield ideological terms to justify their policies and vilify their opponents.
