Play a huge role in canadian politics: party leader needs control over party: centralized and disciplined. Two-party system: broadness undercuts need for another party: single-member plurality system for leg elections, state laws make it harder for third party to get on the ballot. Party organization: jacksonian era: mass democratic politics, progressive era: attacked political parties as corrupt, inefficient, primitive, decline of party org since 60s: candidate-centered organization, tv-centered campaigning (seriously raising campaign costs), fund raising.
