Economists define poverty using monetary measures, using data collected from household surveys of incomes and expenditures. If the household falls below a defined poverty line, it is classed poor . page 246. Non-monetary measures of poverty include infant mortality, life expectancy and literacy. Children of the chronically poor tend to remain poor as adults.
