A record of the actual speech that socrates delivered in his own defense at the trial. Dealing with a speech that socrates made as a matter of history. Style of language = plato but the spiritual and moral beauty of character = socrates. Made of up three parts: 1 = the main speech, 2 = a counter assessment, 3 = last words to the jury. Socrates led a very simple life: he renounced wealth and held himself back from participating in politics, instead, he preferred to speak with crowds of people in public. Brought before a jury of 500 men on charges of not believing in the gods and corrupting the athenian youth. Was found guilty by a very narrow margin and then sentenced to death. Plato = the author of the apology one of socrates" greatest admirers: our knowledge of socrates stems mostly from plato"s dialogue.
