Many people have critiqued standard de nitions of peace that concentrate on the mere absence of war. From notions of positive peace to human security, contemporary understandings of peace tend to focus on personal, community, and national well-being, prosperity, and tranquility. Second, existing perspectives often assume that con ict and violence are synonymous. That con ict is the antithesis of peace and is therefore something to avoid altogether. Some forms of con ict such as nonviolent resistance often occur as a necessary way to dramatize severe injustices, pressure changes, and address commonly held grievances.
