Prides consist of 3-12 females, 6-12 males, females are closely related and males are interrelated. Females stay in pride all their lives, have high reproductive life, males have less span. Males spend time as nomads before taking over a pride. After takeover, they kill the cubs in the pride, and copulate with females who bear their young. Females go into estrus at the same time, so cubs are the same age, and engage in communal suckling, which allows cubs to feed when mom is away. Causal: chemical cues by take over from males (take over by the pride) Functional: offspring are same age after birth and males have a companion when they leave the group.
