This change in ideal resulted in people of all body shapes becoming aware and mindful of their weight (even those who would not have been considered overweight previously) Some suggested reasons for why there was a shift: Crowded cities (being large meant taking up more space and being a nuisance) Higher mortality rate for larger people (promoted by insurance company) Being overweight came to be viewed as a personal fault (from a lack of will power), but it was easy to treat with diet and exercise if disciplined. Despite it being primarily genetic (cid:498)set point(cid:499) Being thin meant you were disciplined and could deny yourself guilty pleasures meant you were affluent (had the time and money to be fit in a natural way)
