Sports psych section 5: sport team as an effective group. Cohesion = is a dynamic process which is reflected in the tendency for a group to stick together and remained united in the pursuit of its instrumental objectives and/or for the satisfaction of member affective needs. The task vs. social cohesion distinction appears to be important for all age groups. Group integration = represents each individual"s perception about the closeness, similarity, and bonding within the group as a total unit, set, or collection (ie. has we" and us" evaluations). Individual attractions to the group = represents each individual"s personal attraction to the group, and more specifically, what personal motivations act to retain the individual in the group (ie. has i" and me" evaluations) Cohesiveness is multi-dimensional, it is associated with a variety of correlates/ factors. Individuals who are in close proximity (physically closer to each other), have a greater tendancy to bond together.
