Healthcare system: the medical and social services that provide healthcare support to canadians; ranges from health promotion, to health maintenance, to long-term chronic care. Medical model: a healthcare model that favors surgery, drug therapy, and rehabilitation through physical therapies with a focus on the treatment of disease and injuries, usually in the physician"s office, a hospital, or other healthcare institutions. Canada"s health insurance system supports the medical model funnels most healthcare money to doctors and hospitals. Physicians often get little training in other forms of healthcare such as counseling or long-term community care. Social model: a healthcare model that includes personal and family counseling, homecare, and adult daycare programs as part of the healthcare system, and that tries to keep older people in their homes. Including formal services, home/institutional care, and family care, for people who have functional limitations. People with dementia often need ltc until the end of their lives.
