Excel
For PC’s: Excel 2010, 2013 or 2106 can be used. The textbook uses Excel 2010 on a PC. For Mac’s: Use
Excel 2011 or 2016 (that’s standard). With respect to the material in this course, all these versions of Excel
(for PC’s and Mac’s) are very similar.

You MUST work through the information and
Practice Exercises in these five sections (Basics,
Formulas, Charts, Functions, Data) of the
tutorial. You MUST do this on your own during
the first few weeks of the course. You MUST do
as much of this as possible.
YOU WILL BE TESTED ON THIS AT QUIZ #1.
This material is general and you have probably
already seen some of it. The goal is to become
familiar with the material, to learn it generally,
not to memorize it.
When we use this material later in the course
for specific problems (models, linear
programming, simulation, waiting lines) you will
have to learn the material more carefully.
You usually don’t memorize things in Excel
because Excel has lots of help features.

Optional Excel (video) tutorials
Optional Excel tutorials are available on Youtube. There are versions for PC’s and versions for Mac’s. If
you can find them my favourites are:
(optional) Tutorial for PC users: Excel 2013 Essential Training with Dennis Taylor.
On Youtube search for ‘Excel 2013, Dennis Taylor’. The video should be 6 hours long. I have also seen
this called Microsoft Excel 2013 Tutorial for Beginners (1), (2), (3), (4) with Dennis Taylor. Note that
there are four tutorials (1), (2), (3), (4); and they take a total of about 6 hours. <click here>
(optional) Tutorial for Mac users: Excel for Mac 2011 Essential Training with Curt Frye

Business Decision Models <click here to go to the podcast>
We develop a mathematical model of a real business decision problem. We analyze the model to
develop insights into the business problem and then find a solution for the business problem.
Steps: 1. Define the business problem What are the parameters/input variables (known and unknown
or certain and uncertain), decision variables, and results/output variables?
2. Develop a mathematical model in Excel What are the mathematical relationships
between the variables?
3. Acquire input data
4. Develop the solution Determine the best values of the decision variables
5. Analyze the results using sensitivity analysis Change the values of the input variables
6. Implement the results
