COMMERCE 2QA3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Interquartile Range, Time Series, Box Plot
Document Summary
Rule of thumb for histographs is that if you have n data points, we use about log2 n. Stem-and-leaf displays: shows quantitative data values in a way that sketches the distribution of the data. To describe shape, look for single vs. multiple modes and symmetry vs. skew. Mode: a peak of local high point in the shape of the data distribution. The apparent location of modes can change as the scale of a histogram is changed. This is a useful term for describing the shape of a histograph when it"s generally mound-shaped. Uniform: a data distribution that"s roughly flat is said to be approximately uniform. Symmetric: a data distribution is approximately symmetric if the two halves on either side of the centre look approximately like mirror images of each other. Tails: the tails of a distribution are the parts that typically trail off on either side. Skewed: a distribution is skewed if one tail stretches tout farther than the other.
