COMMERCE 1BA3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Thermostat, Cultural Intelligence, Politicking With Larry King
Chapter 1 – p.4-25
Organization – social inventions for accomplishing common goals through group effort
1. Who social conventions (every organization about people, who are the critical
stakeholders, who is the problem)
2. Whatcommon goals (whats the goal you are trying to achieve, what is the organization
asking you to do?)
3. Howgroup effort (how will we get there)
• Internal Consulting- (eg. you are a manager in an organization confronting any issues
pertaining to any of the 1BA3 topics)
• External Consulting (eg. you are hired by an organization to provide advice on any of the
1BA3 topics)
What is Organizational Behaviour (OB)?
- the attitudes(T) and behaviours of individuals and groups in organizations(R) [micro,
mezzo, macro]
o S+T=R (given a situation, how you think determines/reflects how you will
respond)
o DP>RP=S (Demand>Resources=Stress, P=perceived)
o MICRO (individual) the study and practice of understanding: how you speak,
how you handshake, eye-contact, etc
o MEZZO (group) the study and practice of understanding and making teams,
groups, and departments
▪ SYNERGY – the addition of the parts if greater than the parts themselves,
2+2=5.
o MACRO (organization) the study and practice of the entire organization. How
the technology is affecting the entire company internally and externally. Is the
structure compatible with these factors? Can it adjust?
- Attempt to understand, predict, explain, and manage how people behave at work
(author’s opinion)
o 4 Steps: (thermostat analogy)
1. Understand the current state (slow down to speed up)
2. Desired state – what do we have to identify? Will this team work well
together? Will the division be innovative or not? (desired goals)
3. Identify the magnitude of the gap and close the gap-closing means improving
motivation, leaders, enhancing cultural levels, and 1BA3.
a. Explain your prediction
4. Measure the change and start again – consulting projects, etc.
Managerial Roles
1. Informational Roles the way you(manager) takes information and transmits it (receive
and give information)
o Monitor
▪ – to scan, heading to that zone that your head is always in the game,
scanning for competition
▪ - you’re ahead of it (generally, a more pro-active state of mind than re-
active).
