The classic age of greek history (500 323 bce) brought the greeks into conflict with the greatest power in the world, the persian empire. The spartan way : sparta and athens at the beginning of the classic age were the two most powerful. Greek cities: sparta was one of the dorian city-states. Sparta was purely an agricultural economy that never engaged in trade (so it became poor): sparta"s military was based solely on the army since it couldn"t afford a navy.
