Achilles sees all the greeks fleeing back to the ships and is confused as to what is happen in the battle. Antilochus goes to achilles and delivers the news the patroclus is dead. Achilles is full of grief and his mother thetis hears him; she calls upon all the nereids from the deep sea and tells them she must go see her child. Thetis, with the sea nymphs, heads to troy and confronts achilles about why he grieves. Achilles tells his mother that he blames zeus for all of this and that he no longer sees value in life because one of his best friends has died. Achilles hopes to gain revenge on hector and kill him. Thetis tells achilles that it is fated that his own death will follow hectors: achilles blames himself for patroclus" death; saying he should have swallowed his bread and helped his men in battle.
