Document Summary

Chemistry: unit 4 module 1 periodic trends. Up until 1962 it was thought that noble gases did not undergo any chemical reactions considered inert. In 1962, chemist neil bartlett made a discovery that some noble gases react. Many noble gas compounds have been synthesized for the heavier elements of the family, namely krypton and xenon, with the oxidation state of xenon reaching +8. The general stability of the noble gases comes from the electron configurations of the noble gases where all subshells are completely filled filled subshells render atoms more stable. Generally, non-metals (main group s and p block) usually only lack 1,2 or 3 electrons to fill their shells they want to gain them to gain stability. Only need to gain one electron to achieve a noble gas configuration. As we go up the group from iodine to bromine to chlorine, we go from solid to liquid to gas.
