BIOLOGY 1P03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 31.5-31.6: Sustainable Development, Ecosystem Services, Organic Farming
Document Summary
Readings 14 ch 31 conserving earth"s biodiversity. Human activities pose many threats to biodiversity. Reversing these activities is crucial to preserving biodiversity. Without suitable natural habitat, many species cannot survive: therefore, it is essential to set aside habitat in protected reserves and to connect small, fragmented reserves with wildlife corridors. Coral reserves = natural areas protected from human uses. Encompasses enough space to preserve ecosystem with al their biodiversity, withstanding storms and floods without losing species. Wildlife corridors = strips of protected land linking core reserves allow animals to move relatively freely and safely between habitats that would otherwise be isolated increase the effective size of small reserves by connecting them. Natural ecosystems share features that allow them to persist and flourish. Important characteristics of sustainable ecosystems include: diverse communities, stable populations that remain within the carrying capacity, recycling and use of raw materials, reliance on renewable sources of energy.
