BIOLOGY 1M03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Null Hypothesis, Phylogenetic Tree, Cell Theory
Document Summary
Chapter 1 quick textbook notes: organisms share a suite of 5 fundamental characteristics, energy: to stay alive and reproduce organisms have to acquire and use energy. Plants absorb sunlight; animals ingest food: cells: organisms made up of cells. Cells membrane regulates passage of material between exterior and interior spaces. If certain heritable traits lead to increased success in producing offspring, then those traits become more common in the population over time. Hence, populations characteristic change over time as a result of natural selection. High fitness= many surviving offspring (ie. high protein kernels had high fitness: adaptation: trait that increases the fitness of an individual in particular environment (ie. high protein) Helps us understand relationship between organisms and history of species: phylogeny: an organisms actual genealogical relationship, phylogenetic tree: depicts evolutionary history. Branches with rece(cid:374)t co(cid:373)(cid:373)o(cid:374) a(cid:374)cestor are closely related. Bra(cid:374)ches that do(cid:374)"t share a co(cid:373)(cid:373)o(cid:374) a(cid:374)cestor are more distantly related.
