The building where these were housed was designed by frederic leplay and consisted of seven concentric rings, of which the two inner ones held the fine arts (allotted a very small amount of space). As such the public would first go through the outer circles and see the agricultural, industrial, and technological sections before reaching the much tinier art section. The administration was well aware of this problem with space and ran the salon as usual this year as an extended display and as a consolation prize for those artists who were denied admission to the champs-de-mars. Yet artists of smaller works were inconvenienced by the risk that they could go to this trouble and have their (cid:449)o(cid:396)k (cid:396)eje(cid:272)ted. Mo(cid:396)eo(cid:448)e(cid:396), the ju(cid:396)(cid:455) had the (cid:396)ight to let i(cid:374) (cid:449)o(cid:396)ks of (cid:862)u(cid:374)disputa(cid:271)le (cid:373)e(cid:396)it(cid:863) 74 which would free some artists of the complications of submission but was unfair to other artists.
