As a general rule, a person is assigned as crime scene coordinator and takes charge of the operation, overseeing the procedures at the scene and ensuring that they are carried out correctly and meticulously. A criminal case involving a search for a buried body will often be prompted by information obtained from a previous investigation or a tip-off given to the police. Such a burial is known as a clandestine grave because the body will have been concealed with the aim of keeping the murder secret. For an exhumation, the police will seek the help of forensic personnel trained in archaeology because the procedures they utilize will be meticulous. Inuit burial practices: the permafrost prevented the digging of graves so a body would be wrapped in animal skins and deposited on top of the ground. Once the body was free of flesh, the disarticulated bones were placed in a secondary burial site, a communal grave called an ossuary.
