The estimation of living stature from the skeleton is possible because there is a relationship between an individual"s skeletal dimensions and his or her height. Most methods currently employed involve the metric analysis of skeletal elements, measuring certain bone dimensions and using these measurements to calculate a stature estimation. The most accurate methods are full skeleton methods, however this method is not frequently used because a complete skeleton is required. The most commonly utilized methods of estimating stature are regression methods, which are based on a mathematical relationship between bone dimensions and stature. Bones typically measured in these methods are the height of the skull, the heights of the vertebrae, the lengths of the femur and tibia and the height of the ankle. In the case of missing vertebra, it may be possible to estimate the height by averaging the heights of the vertebra immediately above and below.
