Document Summary

2001 anthropology: theoretical practice in culture and society. The subject of the chapter is environmentalism; more so the relation between culture and society and how they impact the environment in the 20th century. The author looks more at what is considered to be more natural base on social conventions and analyzes certain examples and compares how it differs from main stream" ideas; in other words, questions pertaining to the environment. The author asks questions such as, what is natural. The evidence that the author uses to address these questions are examples of the makah and whale hunting, the hindu ban on beef, and the toka of zambia, amongst others. A key thing that i drew from this reading is that anthropologists are troubled by two dualisms: culture and society, and culture and nature. I would have like for the author to include more contemporary examples of environmentalism, as well as some historical ones.
