It is reported that the costs of health care, absenteeism and lost productivity associated with obesity are already in the billions or even trillions of dollars annual. This trend threatens to overwhelm every medical system in the world. Obesity refers to an excess of adipose (fat) tissue on the body, and often understood to be a level of fat that impedes health and functioning. In terms of using a standard cut- off for defining people as obese or not, the most commonly applied classification in medicine and public health is based on body mass index or bmi of 30 of higher.
