ANTHROP 1AB3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Rosin, Worship God, Heir Apparent
Document Summary
Anthropologist bronislaw malinowski lived among and studied the people of the south. If they went shing in the dangerous waters beyond the coral reef they performed rituals to invoke magic for protection. If they went shing in calm waters it was a normal event. Malinowski concluded that people use magic when an outcome is important and beyond their control. Religion seeks to worship god or supernatural forces, while magic doesn"t worship, but rather uses supernatural forces. Baseball is the perfect sport to test malinowski"s hypothesis about magic. Hitting and pitching involve a lot of chance. The pitcher is least able to control the outcome of their own e orts. No matter how well he performs, the win is dependent on the pro ciency of his teammates, the ine ciency of the opposition, and luck. Once the ball is hit, chance determines where it lands. With elding the player has control over the outcome.
