ANTHROP 1AB3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Hunter-Gatherer, Bilateral Descent, Patrilineality
Document Summary
Two issues are important: how women are universally seen a witches, and the idea that mobility is an important factor in the absence of witchcraft. Belief and behaviours to witches varies based on societies concerns. There are however two constant witch beliefs: withes represent peoples deepest fears, and they represent a reversal of normal behaviour. In catholic europe, a mostly white population would attend mass sunday mornings, while witches would be black (black mass) and celebrate sabbath at night. Their prayers would be reversed, the cross would be upside down, and they would worship an antichrist. The idea of the holy trinity would be perverted into a profane incest. Homosexuality and sexual orgies would be seen as witch-like. Women who go against paul and assume authority over men are viewed as witches. Women are more so seen as witches because christ forbade them to give sacraments so its the devil who allows then to do so.
