SOCI 234 Chapter Notes - Chapter reading : Population Pyramid, Demographic Transition, Demographic Dividend
Document Summary
All demographic phenomena are either directly or indirectly determined in some respect by age. The processes of birth, death and migration are all age-dependent. The probability of experiencing demographic event varies with age. Age is also a determining factor in the incidence of other demographic events including cohabitation, marriage, divorce, remarriage, widowhood, labour force activity and unemployment. They are also in various ways related to sex and gender. Females have lower death rates than men in most circumstances. The survival advantage of women over men is nearly universal. The sociological importance of these two demographic characteristics explains our society"s preoccupation with the collection of information on the basis of people"s age and sex. Not only are age and sex data important markers of social and legal status for individuals in society but they are highly relevant in the occurrence of various types of social and demographic behaviour.
