Document Summary
Socialization: process that teaches people to become working members of society; to understand norms, accept beliefs and values. Occurs through socializing act of interacting with surrounding members of society. Even most basic activities require socialization in order to be developed. Humans require social contact in order to thrive and develop sense of self (distinct identity developed through social interaction). Deprivation of comfort and contact lead to developmental/social challenges or disability. Sigmund freud (psychologist): personality closely linked with sexual development. Psychosexual stages: oral, anal, phallic, latency, genital self development linked to stages such as breastfeeding, toilet training, etc. Requires engaging/disengaging from stage; failure results in being trapped within that stage, leading to problems (oral binge drinking, anal neat freak, etc. ) Erik erikson (psychologist): based on freud, development is continuous. Focus on more social aspects vs sexual, ex: managing base desires so to be acceptable in society. Jean piaget (psychologist, child development): focus on role of social interaction in development.
