PSYC 471 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Edward L. Deci, Introjection
Document Summary
Why we do what we do by edward deci. Chapter thirteen: the meaning of human freedom (conclusion) Responsibility doesn"t need to be an obligation, but can be associated with freedom. People find freedom by accepting their real constraints and some arbitrary constraints created by their social environment. The freedom to pursue one"s own ends often results in people relinquishing a lot of their personal freedom due to their own vulnerabilities, i. e. their ego involvements. Social, political, and economic systems affect the extent to which people are free. The high value society places on material objects makes people vulnerable to being controlled by financial rewards and contingent love. The american system offers freedom to pursue desired outcomes, but people"s freedom often ends up being limited by that same pursuit. Freedom is a characteristic of an individual"s psychological functioning at any given moment.
