Offers 2 alternatives for each item and a point given for selection of one of the alternatives. Advantages: obvious simplicity, ease of administration and quick scoring. Disadvantages: encourage students to memorize material allowing them to perform well on tests for which they do not really understand the material. T/f tests do not allow students to demonstrate their understanding fully. Dichotomous formats tend to be less reliable and less precise than other formats: the polytomous format: Each item has more than 2 alternatives (multiple choice exams). Advantages: it takes testers little time to respond because they do not have to write a lot so the test can cover a lot of material in short time. Ineffective distractors may hurt the reliability of the test because they are time consuming to read findings show it is best to develop 3 or 4 good distractors for each item.
