Document Summary
Features that distinguish child and adolescent disorders: children do not refer themselves for treatment. They are always brought in by an adult: many child and adolescent disorders involve failure to show expected developmental progress and so the problem may indeed be transitory, or not. Need to know what"s normal and what"s not: many problems shown by children are not entirely abnormal. Need to know psychological disorders vs. troublesome problem behaviours unlike intervention for adults, we don"t just want to restore previous function. Historical views and breakthroughs children were not always seen as persons with their own rights prior to 18th century: child"s mental health problems (and adult"s) were seldom mentioned. Interest in abnormal child behavior first arose at end of 18th century the church stated that abnormal child behavior had to do with their inherent provocative nature, with possession by evil etc.
