The first treatments for psychological disorders were biological. Eg. bleeding, cuts or application of leeches used to correct biological imbalances presumed to underlie psychological symptoms. Physical strategies designed to calm disturbed behaviour like used prolonged warm baths or ice packs to prevent self harm. For depression, light therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation and deep brain stimulation have all shown pos results. 1930"s: shizo ppts who experienced epileptic seizures showed reduction in schizo symptoms. Hence tried to provoke seizures through applying electrical current to the patients temples through ect. Ect was abandoned as schizo treatment following creation of effective antipsychotic medication, but its still used for treatment unresponsive depression. Use less intense and briefer currents only on one side of the brain to dec neg side effects + usage of anaesthesia and muscle relaxants (dec distress and injury risk) With this, the most commonly reported side effect is retrograde amnesia and mortality rate is at 2 out of 100 000.
