The logic of attribution: b = s + d, this is called the attributional equation or the lewinian equation (named after kurt. Lewin, father of modern social psych: a persons behaviour (b) is thought to be a joint function of the situation the person is in (s) and the person"s unique predispositions (d) When essayists were part of a debate team, the results defied the lewinian equations, and subjects still took the essay as direct evidence of essayist"s opinion. Subjects (called observers) watched a target (who was actually a confederate), playing a game of prisoner"s dilemma (which could be played cooperatively or competitively) Subjects were then asked questions to determine the dispositionalness of the observer"s attribution. Results players, expectant observers, and postexpectant observers all made more dispositional attributions, since they were playing or expecting to play the target: 2) misunderstanding situations, tendency for people to underestimate the power of the situation.
