Chapter 13: heart disease, hypertension, stroke, and diabetes. The number 2 killer in canada: more than 1 out of every 5 deaths in 2007. Disease of modernization: due at least in part to the alterations in diet and reduction in activity level that have accompanied modern life. One of the most significant aspects of chd is that a number of the deaths that occur each year are premature deaths: they occur before the age of 75. Low levels of hdl: family history component, genetically based predisposition to cardiovascular reactivity. Risk factors may cluster by age 14. Experiencing the attack during the daytime, as well as having a family member present, enhances delay. Environment is more distracting: a history of angina or diabetes actually increases delay. Initial treatment: some patients have coronary artery bypass graft (cabg) surgery to treat blockage of major arteries. In the absence of self-efficacy, adherence to the goals of rehabilitation may be low.
