Zimbardo"s prison study (haney, banks & zimbardo, 1973) 24 stanford u undergrad men chosen for their good character and mental health. Determined the guards and prisoners at random. Researches anticipated it would last 2 weeks. The guards turned to verbal abuse and physical humiliation right away. Study had to be terminated after 6 days. Zimbardo says the balance of power in prisons is so unequal that they turn into brutal places unless the guards are under strict regulations. Personality psychology: emphasizes individual differences in behavior rather than the social situation. Cognitive psychology: study of how people perceive, think about, and remember aspects of the world. Sociology: study of behavior of people in the aggregate, study of institutions, subgroups, bureaucracies, mass movements, and changes in the demographic characteristics of populations.
