Worst = stereotypes turn into oppression, frustrations turn into mob violence, conflicts turn into wars. It is a set of individuals, which involves: direct interactions, a shared fate, identity or set of goals with each other over a period of time. Collective = people engaging in common activities but having little direct interaction with each other. Groups can be in all shapes & sizes, large & small, organized, quite informal, short term, long lasting, voluntary or involuntary. Innate need to belong to a group: protection against threat & uncertainty in a physical sense. People join a group for many reasons: to affiliate with others, obtain social status, interact with individual group members . Humans may well have evolved a range of psychological mechanisms that promote an attraction to and capacity for living in groups by vugt & schaller (2008).
