PSYC 211 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Thalamus, Heredity, Posterior Parietal Cortex
Document Summary
An emotional response consists of three types of components: o. Behavioral: consists of muscular movements that are appropriate to the situation that elicits them. Autonomic: facilitate the behaviors and provide quick mobilization of energy for vigorous movement. o: hormonal: reinforce autonomic responses. The integration of the components of fear appears to be controlled by the amygdala: research with laboratory animals stimuli are presented. Single neurons in various nuclei of the amygdala become active when emotionally relevant. The amygdala is located in within the temporal lobes; it is subdivided into 12 regions, among those are three important for this chapter: o. Lateral nucleus (la) = receives information from all regions of the neocortex including ventromedial prefrontal cortex, the thalamus and the hippocampal formation. It sends info to other parts of the brain and to the basal nucleus. Basal nucleus sends info from here and la to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and to the central nucleus.
