Document Summary

William james (1842-1910) is the founder of american psychology. As he noted, psychology is dif cult to study, and simple explanations are few and far between. Psychology is the scienti c study of the mind, brain, and behaviour. Psychology is a discipline that spans multiple levels of analysis. We can think of levels of analysis as rungs on a ladder, with the lower rungs tied most closely to biological in uences and the higher rungs tied most closely to social in uences (ilardi & feldman, 2001; kendler, 2005). To fully understand psychology, we must consider multiple levels of analysis. That"s because each level tells us something different, and we gain knowledge from each vantage point. Some psychologists believe that biological factors like the actions of the brain and its billions of nerve cells are most critical for understanding the causes of behaviour.
