POLI 328 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Finns Party, Election 2, Multiseat Configuration

12 views1 pages

Document Summary

The current party system of finland is multiparty, consisting of 200 members who are elected for a four year term, by proportional representation in 15 multi-seat constituencies. One member is elected from the constituency of aland (a swedish speaking autonomous region in finland), who usually sits with the swedish people"s party in parliament. Traditionally, there are three strong parties in finland"s parliament: the social democrats, the center party, and the national coalition. Often, one party does not have a chance of gaining power alone, and so parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. In the 14 constituencies other than aland, voters are presented with an unordered list of candidates chosen in party primaries. Voters cannot vote for the party directly, but cast their votes for an individual candidate instead.
