There are lots of criticisms to grice"s ideas. Use the key ideas in subsequent work in the course, like when we look at simple clauses in. He wanted to signal this out - special term used in a special way. Philosopher, knew logic, common term for what he calls entailment is called an implication. It"s pretty much like the literary, non-logician use of the word imply . These are things not part of a literal meaning, but are conveyed nonetheless. He distinguishes between what is said (literal meaning) and what is conveyed. Conveyed: literal meaning + implicature, or literal meaning + something added, or some variation of literal meaning. Rough idea of what he had in mind ^. Standard example suppose he is renting out an apartment.
