98% of the jewish population of warsaw perished during wwii, together with 1/4 of the polish population. About 28,000 jews lived on the aryan side in warsaw at one time or another, having stayed out of the ghetto when it was formed or escaped from it to hide. Various groups of friends paid helpers and other jews in hiding to form a large network connecting every jew in hiding to the others. The city had institutions consisting mainly of a group of charitable organizations devoted to bringing aid to the jews. Some people infiltrated the city by playing a double game, helping the jews and providing hiding places and then blackmailing them. Szapse rotholc was a national boxing champion before the war and with his fellow boxer shmuel kenigswein he became a member of the ghetto police and participated in smuggling.
