HIST 393 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: First Battle Of Bull Run
Document Summary
War victimized civilians as well as soldiers perished as a direct result of the conflict. At first bull run, judith henry, an 85 year old widow was killed by an artillery shell. Disease as well as violence threatened civilians, who perished from the same illnesses that produced the preponderance of military deaths. Contagions and epidemics that flourished in army camps spread to the surrounding populations. Hospitals were especially dangerous, nurses and other medical workers often contracted illnesses from the patients they attended or from the polluted water supply they shared. The enormous battled like shiloh, gettysburg, etc. brought unrest that involved and threatened civilians. On farms and plantations, the disruption of war encouraged slaves to challenge their subordination as they witnessed the erosion of white control and anticipated the possibility of their freedom. Some masters died at the hands of slaves seeking vengeance or asserting a new sense of empowerment.
