The battalion was in the chateau of brunemont. On march 19th and 20th, they were told to occupy the dugouts near cagnicourt. The regiment marched out of brunement at the hour that they were told. The morale was high even though it was raining. Training was over and they were now deal with the real war. There were crossroads where guides waited for them and the companies separated. When they got to the second line they found out that the guides were lost as well. He sent the guides out in different directions. He told the men to scatter throughout the shell holes. A huge shell had burst in the middle of all of the men. Half an hour before this happened he was in control of a good company, but many of his company were hurt or died because of the explosion. The men went to a dark and deep dugout.
