Document Summary

Deborah brunton - access to health care, 1880-1930. The late 19th and early 20th centuries have been described as a period of progress. The poorer classes gained access to a whole range of medical services that were previously reserved for the wealthy. Across europe, central and local governments created health insurance schemes and new welfare services to provide the poor with access to care from gps to hospital care and treatments for specific diseases like tuberculosis and venereal diseases. New charities were founded, providing novel services including help for mothers and babies. New medical services were limited to the very poor or to particular groups such as working men or women and children and levels of provision varied between countries and regions. As life expectancy increased, degenerative diseases associated with old age began to cause more deaths. Although people were living longer, they spent more time off of work because of diseases.
