HIST 219 Chapter Notes - Chapter 03-24: Haggadah, Passover
Document Summary
03/24 shternshis, passover in the soviet union: 1917-1941. Passover as a communist platform did not really catch on, so substitute holiday was created--the haggadah. Passover narrative totally transformed into communist one. Rh soon spread and grew into genre. Mainly mocked passover but could attack any other soviet enemies as well. Thus further publications made to spread knowledge of passover mockeries/their harmlessness to soviet society. Despite state policy, relig observance did continue. Passover and red seders both conducted--red seders seen as yiddish cultural events, not anti-jewish. Ppl lived dual life--tho not seen as contradictory. Young ppl less relig, more likely to partake in red seders.
