GEOG 301 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Qikiqtarjuaq, Pangnirtung, Inuit
Document Summary
Elders are aware there is change, but dnt always pay specific attn to it. Inuit elders were generation of great change. Reasons for staying can differ from reasons for coming. Relocation--planned movement of a group, determined by outside agency. Migration--movement undertaken by individuals, outside outside intervention. Persuasion--move under informal, diverse pressure (could come from relatives, govt, etc), both attractions and threats. Howev, hbc/rcmp both encouraged inuit to remain dispersed. Inuit elders remember move, was momentous, defining experiment (were adults @ time) Those who moved as children/teen remember too, are not yet elders. Elders r comfortable retelling experiences/giving interviews, see pseudonyms as. Elders centres were too loud, group-oriented 2 b good for interviews--homes worked laughable much better. Frequent moving was already fact of life for inuit. Should note there were no, and still aren"t any, roads. Families didn"t stay in places they moved to forever. Reasons for move are not always clear, even to mover themselves.
