Inuit kids in 1930"s/40"s were taught to read/write in inuktitut, using syllabic symbol developed by anglican missionaries. Those who grew up more isolated were afraid or alienated by qallunaat/white people. While those who grew up in settlements often found them amusing. Elders have varying memories w interactions w qallunaat missionaries, doctors, police, soldiers, and scientists (who came after whalers/explorers and for different reasons) Franz boas--1883 travels in northern canada, the central eskimo . Balance of humans w/ nature/non human was key to survival/good hunting. When balance had been offset, shaman needed to make ritual contact w sedna, spirit/goddess who controlled animals of the sea. Sedna tricked into marrying bird, promised life w/out worries but has to live in. Her father comes, kills bird, but other birds pursue, cause great storm. Father tries to offer sedna up to the birds, throws her overboard but she clings to terrible conditions side of the boat.
