Inuit hav more choice re: lifestyle than ever. Subsistence remains important food source, but less is needed now. Subsistence was originally both work and leisure--important to identity building. Now clear separation btwn subsistence for food, identity, or recreation. For young inuit, hunting is mostly a recreational activity. Changed econ/occupational goals r reason for shift in meaning of subsistence. Can"t discount subsistence work of women in the home. Contact w westerners was not sustained thru wwii. Settlements offered security at the cost of self determination. Subsistence hunting remained important--snowmobiles made it easier, but more expensive. Real wage-labour jobs/organized activities didn"t take off until 1980"s. Nvt land claims was happening @ same time as intl fur trade market collapse. Movement away from hunting/trapping, towards wage jobs and social welfare. New community programs provided alternate forms of leisure. Inuit raised entirely in settlements hav v complex identities. For active hunters, giving food is important way of reaffirming kinship/importance to community it.
