GEOG 301 Chapter Notes - Chapter 09/29: Muskox, Inuit, Main Source
Document Summary
Hard to pin down exactly which groups are central eskimo . Definition used here--those who live in the central arctic. In winter--lots of landfast ice, islands/peninsulas joined, econ=breathing-hole sealing. In summer--ice melted, lived inland, caribou hunting+fishing, kayak used inland. Also hunted polar bear, musk oxen, tho irregularly. Female infanticide as a response to food availability--thus more men than women. Summer--some split off to hunt caribou, some used kayaks to hunt sea mammals. No female infanticide, more women than men bc of men"s dangerous jobs. Only region that could support real dog teams. Special kayak implements for hunting in sea. Zone 3--caribou eskimo +people of upper black river. Not clear whether or not there was female infanticide. Forced to use stores by food shortages. Different materials used for the same thing, depending on zone. All tribes had varying kinship systems, family/hunting group organization patterns, marriage practices. Copper eskimo tended to b smaller, nuclear fam units.
